When packing for the Catacombs of Paris, travel light. The narrow underground circuit has tight spaces and fragile walls lined with bones. To prevent accidental damage, the site enforces a strict bag policy.

What is the Paris Catacombs bag policy?

You may only bring bags smaller than 40x30x20 cm into the Catacombs.

Small purses and compact daypacks are permitted. If you bring a small backpack, you must carry it in your hand or wear it on your chest. This rule prevents you from accidentally bumping into the bone arrangements.

Can I bring a suitcase or large luggage?

No, you cannot bring suitcases or large luggage into the Paris Catacombs.

Suitcases and large bags are strictly prohibited. The entrance involves a narrow 131-step descent, and the exit has a 112-step spiral staircase. Luggage simply will not fit through these tight passages.

Are there lockers or storage facilities on-site?

There are no lockers or bag storage areas at the Paris Catacombs.

Because the entrance and exit are in different locations, on-site storage is impossible. You exit the site roughly 1.5 kilometers away from the entrance. You must store large bags at your hotel or a public luggage facility before arriving.

Why do I have to wear my backpack on my front?

Wearing your backpack on your front protects the historic walls from damage.

The official tourist path winds through narrow limestone tunnels holding the remains of 6 million Parisians. The bone walls are highly fragile. Wearing bags on your front ensures you do not bump the skulls and femurs when you turn around.

Can I bring water and food in my bag?

You can carry water for the outdoor queue, but eating and drinking are forbidden inside.

Keep a water bottle in your small bag while you wait outside. Once you enter the tunnels, you cannot consume any food or beverages. Pack accordingly and finish snacks before your descent.

What else should I pack in my small bag?

Pack a light jacket and a fully charged camera.

The underground temperature stays at a constant 14°C (57°F) with high humidity. A light sweater is useful year-round. Bring a power bank, as using your camera in low light drains batteries fast. Remember that tripods and selfie sticks are banned.
